For Immediate Release • August 9, 2022  Racers gear up as the NLHF Hospital Bed Races presented by Raymond James makes a triumphant return.

Fort McMurray, AB – On Saturday, September 24th, teams of racers compete head-to-head to see who can push a hospital bed in the fastest time over a 50-meter sprint. The winner takes home the Golden Bedpan Trophy, and everyone who participates helps raise vital funds for the Northern Lights Health Foundation.

Cancelled due to the pandemic shortly before post time in 2021, the NLHF Hospital Bed Races, sponsored by Raymond James, are throttling up with a vengeance this year. The races take place on the Upper Level Parking Lot at the Snye on Clearwater Drive, starting at 11AM when the green flag drops. Teams are encouraged to dress in costumes that reflect their spirit and determination. In addition to the Golden Bedpan Trophy for the fastest team, Team Spirit and Fundraising prizes are up for grabs as well.

“Last year’s cancellation of the Hospital Bed Races was a great disappointment to all of us,” says Health Foundation Executive Director Cindy Amerongen. “Naturally, this year the excitement is greater than it’s ever been.
Everyone connected with the event –– organizers, volunteers, participants, sponsors, and spectators –– are raring to go. We all expect this year’s event to be even zanier and more competitive than ever before.”

The event has grown each year, with more teams registering for their chance to vie for the Golden Bedpan Trophy and a year’s worth of bragging rights.

“This is a great opportunity for working together in a way that was not possible during the height of the pandemic,” says NLHF Director of Development Lorna Ash. “We encourage businesses and community groups and local residents to shake off the rust, to enter teams, and to push each other to do even more to help the community. And to have a lot of fun doing it.”
