Fort McMurray, Alberta – On Jan. 21, 2015, Fort McMurray natives Tyler and Christina Baker will embark on the journey of their lives – hiking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. As part of the Baker Charity Trek, Christina and Tyler have a goal of raising $10,000 for the Northern Lights Health Foundation.
At 5,895 metres (19,431 feet tall), Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the fourth highest in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the Seven Summits, which are the highest mountains of each of the seven continents.
“We’re so thrilled that Christina and Tyler have chosen to support the Health Foundation as part of this once-in-a-lifetime journey!” says Susanne Chaffey, Executive Director of the Health Foundation. “It’s truly phenomenal that they’ve take on an adventure like hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and to do it in support of health care in our community means so much.”
The eight day climb is a test of strength and endurance. For this reason, the Bakers have been training for months and will continue to do so right until they leave for Tanzania. Their training schedule has included extensive time spent running and doing uphill training to build lower body strength in preparation for the trek. In addition to their busy training schedule, the Bakers have been running several community fundraisers to reach their goal of raising $10,000 for community health care.
“We’re both anxious and excited about our trek to the Summit. When deciding on starting this journey – we knew there was no better cause to support than the Northern Lights Health Foundation,” says Christina Baker of the Baker Charity Trek. “We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve received. I’m thrilled to know we can help the Health Foundation make positive changes to health care in our region. Hopefully the energy of all who’ve supported this cause will also give us the energy we’ll need to reach the Summit!”
