Care close to home

During a routine health check up this July, Darlene Predham discovered that the cancer had returned. Despite her diagnosis, she remains a dedicated and passionate community volunteer. Between shifts at the food bank and Keyano Theatre, Darlene is able to undergo chemotherapy treatments at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.

With bravery and encouragement from her support network, Darlene refuses to let the cancer dictate her life. During her first battle six years ago, she drove to the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton for treatment. Although she was happy with the care, the constant hotel booking and travel time became too much for her to bear. She was forced to move away from her family and friends during treatment to reduce costs.

“You shouldn’t need to stress about paying travel costs for health care during a critical time in your life,” says Darlene. “If you’re travelling, your life is interrupted. Getting your treatment in Wood Buffalo on the other hand, your quality of life is improved.”

Wood Buffalo is a growing community, and the Community Cancer Clinic at the Health Centre is proud to offer care close to home for patients requiring chemotherapy treatment. Compared to Darlene’s first time receiving care, the Health Centre now has televisions, five beds, and thanks to a very generous donation from Total E&P Canada Ltd.–two heated massage chairs.

“My chemo takes five hours, so I appreciate the dedication from the staff and donor support to improve care. You couldn’t ask for any better,” says Darlene.

“When you have something this devastating happen, it’s a comfort knowing you can have it treated quickly, right here in town.”

With your support, the Northern Lights Health Foundation funds vital health care needs in Wood Buffalo. Support community health care close to home.
