Nigerian Canadian Association of Fort McMurray gives heartfelt gift of over $17,500 to the Health Foundation

Fort McMurray, Alberta – The Northern Lights Health Foundation is pleased to announce a generous gift of $17,550 from the Nigerian Canadian Association of Fort McMurray (NCAFM). The Association raised the gift through contributions from approximately 103 members in 23 days! The Health Foundation recently gathered with over 20 of these members to celebrate this remarkable contribution to local health care.

“Nigeria is a multicultural nation with estimated population of 150 million. We have sizeable number of Nigerians Canadians living in Fort McMurray. These comprise of many professionals: doctors (about 30 per cent doctors in Fort McMurray are from Nigeria); engineers (many working in multinational corporations) and other professionals working and practicing here in the community,” says Tony Aruleba, President of NCAFM. “In 2010, the Association made similar donation of $10,000 to the Health Foundation. With the determination to continue giving back to the community, the Association members raised another $17,550 within 23 days. This is exciting as donations range as low as $5 to $1,260 among about 103 donors.”

The funds donated by the Association support the Health Foundation’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of health and wellness services for those living and working within our region.

“The Health Foundation is thrilled to have received this extraordinary gift from the Nigerian Canadian Association of Fort McMurray! To have gathered their Association members and collectively raised these funds in less than a month demonstrates true dedication and commitment to this community,” says Susanne Chaffey, Executive Director of the Health Foundation.”Their gift will have a lasting impact on patients receiving medical care at our Health Centre.”

In 2007, the NCAFM began with a small group of Nigerians to promote the image of Nigerian and its cultural values in Fort McMurray. The Association seeks to promote friendship and mutual understanding between Nigerians and other people residing in Fort McMurray. Membership is open to all Nigerians and others who reside primarily in the city.
