Health Foundation receives over $51,000 from
NorthStar Ford Annual Charity Poker Tournament

Fort McMurray, Alberta – The Northern Lights Health Foundation is proud to receive over $51,000 in funds raised through the 4th Annual NorthStar Ford Charity Poker Tournament, which will assist in funding enhancements to palliative care services within the Medicine Unit of the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. A cheque presentation will take place with NorthStar Ford and the Health Foundation on Wednesday, April 8, 2015.

Palliative care is a specialized medical care provided to people with serious, life-threatening illness. The goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both patients and their loved ones. The Health Foundation is raising funds to expand palliative care services in the Health Centre to include new patient suites with adjoining family rooms. The expanded, renovated suites will provide a home-like atmosphere where patients and their loved ones can be comfortable during end of life care.

“The Health Foundation is thrilled to have been selected as one of NorthStar’s chosen charities for their Annual Charity Poker Tournament! Thank you to NorthStar Ford and all of the event supporters for making this event such a success,” said Susanne Chaffey, Executive Director of the Health Foundation. “The funds raised will assist in making a tremendous difference in the lives of ailing patients and their loved ones.”

Last month, 124 philanthropists attended NorthStar’s 4th Annual Charity Poker Tournament in Calgary, in support of the Health Foundation and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. The event successfully raised over $102,000, with each charity receiving half of the proceeds. Funds were raised through event registration, live and silent auctions. NorthStar’s annual event has successfully raised over $380,000 to date for charities throughout Alberta.

“One of the core values of North Star Ford is that we must support the communities that support us. The two charities selected this year and the teams that work in their facilities do an unbelievable job supporting people who need access,” said Marty Giles, Owner of NorthStar Ford Group. “Thanks to 124 of our closest friends who helped pull of this result.”

NorthStar Ford takes great pride in serving the communities in which they operate and give back to many worthy causes. They are a committed supporter of health care in Wood Buffalo, having donated over $430,000 to the Health Foundation since 1998. Marty Giles has also served previously on the Health Foundation’s Board of Directors in addition to acting as the Chair of the Health Foundation’s MRI Campaign in 2005. Their longstanding support has assisted in funding priority medical equipment, programs and services in our community.
